'Sometimes the work commissioned and presented by HTBA runs closer to scientific research, social anthropology, business ventures or political intervention than it does to traditional arts practice. It doesn’t matter...' (Gillian Dyson, Project Co-ordinator, Hull Time Based Arts)

Over its first decade and a half, Hull Time Based Arts has forged an intricate relationship between issues of aesthetics and economy, corporeality, locality, virtuality, ethics and exchange. Out of Time traces its history as one of the UK’s most anarchic and experimental arts organisations. This lively book incorporates commissioned articles and images from artists working in performance, installation and new time based technological practices.

Produced by MAK, Vienna with Hull Time Based Arts and partners to coincide with the European tour and UK premiere of the new work by Granular Synthesis at Ferens Art Gallery, Hull. This book traces the history and development of the collaborative partnership Granular Synthesis - Austrian artists Kurt Hentschläger and Ulf Langheinrich. Granular Synthesis has made a significant contribution to the advancement of new technology installation. Developing a synergy between performer and digital machine their work challenges notions of audience, site and duration.
The book follows the working processes and technological research of the artists, including their work with Michael Krammer, dancer performer, and Akemi Takeya, dancer singer performer. The CD demonstrates the manipulation of sub base to create ambienSt, physical audio work. It is superb as an accompaniment to the book, or as a 'stand alone' sound recording. Forward by Mike Stubbs and Peter Noever. Text in English and German.
