Hull shines bright for Light Night
Cities across Yorkshire came alive for Light Night, on Friday October 6th, the finale of the Illuminate arts and culture festival.
For the first time ever Hull, Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and York carried out a synchronized series of events and projects featuring art installations, games, public art trails, literature and performance. Each city presented a unique programme of events in this cultural spectacular, with public involvement a central theme in Hull Time Based Arts' contribution.
The bright lights of Hull Fair and a musical procession led by young people carrying lanterns set the tone for an exciting evening's entertainment. Ferens Art Gallery and Central Library stayed open late with activities including video projections and Freee's film commission featuring Hull comic Norman Collier. Further projections and light-based artwork decorated the city centre and the river Hull area was abuzz with artistic happenings organised by Hull Art Lab.
Speaking prior to the evening's entertainment, Samantha Sumerfield, Arts Development Officer for Hull City Council and Light Night co-ordinator in Hull said: "We have a really exciting programme in Hull with a wide variety of activities to see and do during the evening. It is a good thing for Hull to be involved in regional events such as this. It really puts us on the map in terms of the arts and culture".
